The Types of Sterilization

Industrial Sterilization Types: Ionization and EtO

IONISOS is the result of the merger between Conservatome, specializing in ionizing treatments, and Amphytrion, an expert in gamma radiation. Our company thus benefits from over 60 years of experience in various types of sterilization.

With the addition of ethylene oxide, and soon X-rays, IONISOS offers you tailored industrial sterilization solutions.

Gamma Rays: An Ideal Sterilization Method for Medical Equipment

Among the three sterilization processes currently employed by IONISOS, gamma radiation is one of the most widely used. It effectively eliminates microorganisms through the action of rays emitted from a controlled radioactive source, Cobalt 60.

Gamma treatment involves exposing the products to radiation within a specialized chamber for a limited period. The exposure time and absorbed dose are determined based on the materials.

Without requiring elevated temperatures or quarantine after treatment, gamma sterilization has a strong penetration power, allowing entire pallets to be treated. It is especially used for medical devices, surgical instruments, as well as pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

Beta Treatment: A Low-Temperature Sterilization Process

This ionization sterilization uses an electron beam to eliminate all microorganisms without residual effects.

Also known as e-beam sterilization, this method involves exposing products—packaged in cartons—to two passes under an electron flux. The result is highly effective, with an extremely reduced processing time.

Ethylene Oxide Treatment: The Solution for Sensitive Products

This is a gas sterilization method, suitable for items with air-permeable packaging. Depending on the materials to be treated, various parameters are adjusted: ethylene oxide concentration, temperature (between 30 and 60°C), humidity level, pressure, and exposure time. Sterilization occurs in a vacuum chamber.

Ethylene oxide, or EtO, is used to sterilize medical devices that cannot withstand ionization treatments. This gas effectively destroys bacteria, viruses, and other unwanted organisms, ensuring impeccable hygiene.

X-Ray Sterilization: A Broad Range of Applications

Fast, with excellent penetration and compatible with a wide range of materials, X-ray treatment will soon complement our industrial sterilization solutions. We are currently building a dedicated facility for this technique to further expand our expertise and ensure the satisfaction of our most demanding clients.
