For several decades, IONISOS has been developing cutting-edge solutions for industrial sterilization. In addition to ETO and ionization techniques using radiation, we now offer X-ray sterilization. This is an opportunity to explain the fundamental differences between gamma rays and X-rays.
Gamma Rays and X-Rays: Two Effective Sterilization Methods
Ionizing Radiation Sterilization: Principle and Performance
Whether discussing X-rays or gamma rays, these are electromagnetic waves. They are called ionizing rays because exposure to them results in the formation of ions.
X-Ray Sterilization VS Ionization
Ionization sterilization includes three types of radiation: beta, gamma, and X-rays. The principle remains the same regardless of the technique used: exposing the products to a powerful beam to destroy the microorganisms present. The dose and exposure time vary depending on the characteristics of the items being sterilized.
Electron beam sterilization (beta radiation) has the advantage of rapidly treating a large number of products but offers limited penetration. Gamma radiation, on the other hand, has better penetration but requires several hours of exposure. This is where X-rays come into play, combining both power and rapid action.
X-rays and gamma rays are compatible with most materials. Only certain substances may experience discoloration or degradation. X-ray sterilization stands out because, with a shorter exposure time, the potential side effects are less pronounced.
Exposure to X-rays destroys viruses, bacteria, parasites, molds, and yeasts, making it a valuable tool for professionals in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. Additionally, the process leaves no residue and therefore requires no waiting period before the products can be used.
Industrial X-Ray Sterilization with IONISOS
As fast as electron beams and as effective as gamma ionization, X-rays offer a wide range of applications. That’s why IONISOS has chosen to develop this new approach for its clients in the medical, pharmaceutical, and packaging sectors, among others.
X-ray sterilization takes place in a center exclusively dedicated to this technique. Additionally, IONISOS guarantees the same level of service as with beta and gamma ionization or ethylene oxide sterilization:
- personalized support from a dedicated contact;
- large volume processing within optimal timeframes;
- quality control conducted by our in-house laboratories.
