Gamma Radiation

Gamma Radiation: A Premium Sterilization Service

Widely used since the 1960s in the industrial sector, gamma radiation is a proven technique for the treatment of large quantities of pre-packaged products on pallets.

With over 25 years serving professionals in the medical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic sectors, IONISOS is one of the leading European companies in gamma treatment.

We offer a high-end, responsive service in all circumstances for the sterilization of your products or the crosslinking of your plastic components. Discover all the benefits of gamma radiation and our service offering.

Gamma Radiation Sterilization: Principles and Benefits

Gamma rays are obtained from the decay of Cobalt-60, an artificially produced radioactive source.
During a gamma sterilization, products are loaded onto an automated conveyor system moving at a specific speed. They pass through a concrete cell and are exposed to the rays for treatment. The dose and exposure time are determined in advance based on the nature of the products and their packaging.

Often preferred for the sterilization of medical devices and pharmaceutical products, gamma radiation has many advantages, starting with its flexibility: it allows simultaneous treatment (with the same effectiveness) of products requiring different doses or packaged in various materials.

Most importantly, it is suitable for the sterilization of entire pallets, allowing the processing of a full load in a few hours. Unlike ethylene oxide, it leaves no residue, so products are available immediately without undergoing a post-treatment aeration phase, which incurs storage costs.

Gamma: A Wide Range of Applications

Gamma radiation allows for the sterilization of a broad variety of products.
In its services, IONISOS handles many medical devices (pre-filled syringes, dressings, catheters…), laboratory accessories, as well as pharmaceutical, veterinary, and cosmetic products.

Regarding our gamma crosslinking services (a process of irradiating plastic parts to enhance their strength), we work with professionals in the automotive and industrial sectors who rely on us to optimize the performance of plastic tubes, cables, and wires.

The only constraint with gamma radiation? The rays have strong penetration power, so products must withstand ionization to maintain their properties. This technique is compatible with a wide range of resins and even liquids, providing a broad field of application.
