Sterilization of Packaging for Food and Beverages: Beta or Gamma?
It is possible to sterilize all types of food and beverage packaging with IONISOS: from plastic pouch packaging (for drinks, applesauce) to cardboard packaging, as well as glass jars or bottles.
The choice between beta or gamma sterilization will depend on the mechanical properties of the packaging and its composition to avoid any alteration.
On this point, your dedicated IONISOS advisor will guide you to ensure effective and 100% reliable treatment.
Gamma treatment will be performed on pallets, where the products will be loaded onto an automatic conveyor system that will pass through a concrete cell where they will be exposed to radiation at a predetermined dose for a specified time.
Food packaging sterilization by e-beam is done by cartons, which pass under the rays twice (once upright and then upside down) for a few seconds.
Both methods have the advantage of being able to sterilize an entire load within a few hours. The products are immediately available afterward and do not need to be ventilated since this technique leaves no chemical residue.
Despite the relative similarity of the two techniques, beta and gamma differ in the nature of their rays: gamma is derived from the decay of Cobalt 60 and has a high penetration capacity, while beta rays consist of beams of accelerated electrons with a more limited penetration depth—this second technique is thus less likely to deform certain types of resins.
