Gas sterilization

Gas sterilization: A tailored treatment with ethylene oxide

Gas sterilization is ideal for treating products that are incompatible with irradiation using ionizing rays (beta, gamma) due to their composition.

With Ionisos, a specialist in industrial sterilization for over 60 years, you are guaranteed a high-end service and personalized support.

What is ethylene oxide sterilization?

Ethylene oxide treatment (also known as ETO or EO sterilization) is performed within a vacuum chamber where the products are placed.

The products are exposed to ethylene oxide for a specified duration while maintaining a predetermined gas concentration, humidity level, and temperature established during validation tests based on the nature and characteristics of the products, ensuring that the process does not damage them.

Initially, the products are preheated and humidified before being placed in a vacuum cell. The treatment occurs at low temperatures (between 30 and 60°C) to avoid deforming the materials.

Once the process is completed, the products are aerated in a dynamic cell for the degassing phase, which removes any residual gas. This final step lasts from 24 to a maximum of 48 hours. After the necessary verification checks, the order can then be shipped to the client, who will be able to use the products immediately.

What are the advantages of EO treatment?

Ethylene oxide is a toxic gas for living organisms, which is why it is highly effective and is preferred for use in the medical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural fields, where it is used to sterilize products and instruments on an industrial scale.

Its advantages are numerous, starting with its compatibility with a wide range of materials and resins—including those that are incompatible with beta or gamma sterilization.

The gas infiltrates even the smallest folds and corners of the products as long as their packaging is permeable to gas—resulting in increased effectiveness since the treatment can be performed once the products have already been packaged.

Finally, Ionisos develops customized cycles that minimize the concentration of ethylene oxide. This way, the ETO treatment at our specialized sites leaves very low levels of residual gas—allowing us to shorten the degassing phase so that you can retrieve your products as quickly as possible.

Ionisos: 2 ETO sites and personalized support

IONISOS has 2 ETO sterilization sites (one in Rhône and the other in Loiret) to handle all your orders in France and Europe.

Our centers comply with ISO 11135 standards, and the sterilization validation process is conducted directly in our chemical and microbiological analysis laboratory to ensure true reliability and a customized treatment perfectly tailored to your needs.

Most importantly, by placing your trust in us, you benefit from personalized support with a single point of contact who will guide you through all your projects, regardless of the sterilization technique used. We provide ongoing support throughout the lifespan of your products and adjust the process if you make any modifications to one of your products.
