Process of Gamma Radiation Sterilization

Gamma treatment is an ionization sterilization process, meaning it works by energy absorption.

The process is simple and completely safe: products are transported in their final packaging, either by parcel or pallet, on an automated conveyor system programmed to move at a specific speed according to the previously determined exposure time required.

The conveyor passes through a concrete cell with walls 2 meters thick, inside of which is Cobalt 60 (a radioactive source) whose activity produces radiation for a limited duration. For optimal safety, Cobalt 60 is sealed in a double-layer stainless steel container and suspended above a water pool. When in “rest” mode, the cobalt is submerged in 7 to 8 meters of water to contain the radiation.

The products pass under the rays for the necessary time to achieve perfect sterilization—the exposure dose is calculated by us based on the nature of the products and their characteristics, following the applicable validation standards such as ISO 11137-2.
