Process of Sterilizing Medical Devices: Our Services

With over 25 years of expertise, the IONISOS group is your preferred provider for the sterilization of your medical devices, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products in France and across Europe.

Here, we present the different processes for sterilizing medical devices that we offer, along with their specific features and respective advantages.

The Gamma: An Ideal Sterilization Technique for Your Packaged Medical Devices

Gamma irradiation is a method of sterilizing medical devices (MD) that is particularly effective for treating large quantities of products (packages or pallets) in their final packaging.

This technique has a high penetration depth for a low dose and allows for the simultaneous sterilization of products with different compositions with great precision—even if their packaging sizes vary.

The products are transported into an irradiation cell where they receive a dose range according to the client’s specifications. They are then stored and released by an authorized personnel.

This technique is suitable for the treatment of medical devices and single-use items: gloves, syringes, catheters, infusion kits, etc.

Beta Sterilization: A Fast and Flexible Method

The beta treatment allows for the sterilization of medical devices using an electron beam. The principle is quite similar to that of gamma, as the products are transported into the treatment cell via an automatic conveyor system.

This sterilization technique requires only a few seconds of treatment per product, thus enabling a complete load of bags or packages to be processed in just a few hours.

Flexible and reproducible, this method is suitable for products of different natures: syringes, dialysis products, catheters, dressings…

Ethylen Oxide: A Wide Range of Applications

Ethylene oxide can be used for the treatment of medical devices such as syringes, gloves, compresses, catheters, surgical trays…

This method allows for gas treatment of products incompatible with sterilization by radiation, including those made of resin or non-radio-resistant plastic. For this, the packaging must be permeable to ethylene oxide.

After a preconditioning phase in which products are preheated and humidified, they are treated under vacuum at low temperatures (between 30 and 60°C) within a sealed chamber, which helps avoid any alteration. The gas destroys the microorganisms present by spreading inside the products and can penetrate multiple layers of packaging.

The aeration phase following treatment eliminates gas residues within 48 hours.
