The Different Sterilization Processes

The Different Low-Temperature Sterilization Processes

Many industries require sterilization for their production. This includes the medical, pharmaceutical, veterinary sectors, as well as the food and cosmetics industries, for example.

Founded in 1993, IONISOS applies various sterilization processes, offering true expertise and personalized support.

Three Proven Sterilization Methods

IONISOS exclusively uses sterilization processes at ambient temperature and without pressure modification, which helps to preserve the properties of the products. The choice of technique depends on multiple factors: the composition and characteristics of the item to be decontaminated, its density, the type of packaging and conditioning, etc.

The industrial sterilization aims to eliminate microorganisms both on the surface and internally, ensuring the sterile state of the treated products. Here are the three techniques used by IONISOS.

Beta Ray or E-Beam Sterilization

This sterilization method uses an ionizing beam emitted by an electron accelerator. Directed onto the product to be treated, beta rays have the property of modifying the molecules they pass through.

Beta sterilization is generally performed in cartons, which are conveyed through an irradiation chamber twice (first one side, then the other). Depending on the composition and density of the products, the speed at which the cartons pass under the beam is adjusted.

The benefits of e-beam sterilization are:

  • optimal processing speed;
  • decontamination at ambient temperature;
  • absence of residues.

Gamma Ray Sterilization

This sterilization technique uses a photon beam emitted from a cobalt-60 source. Applied for a short period, this ionizing radiation alters the internal structure of microorganisms, leading to their immediate destruction.

Gamma sterilization occurs at low temperatures and can be performed on entire pallets, even with different types of products.

Its advantages are:

  • treatment under packaging, thus no risk of recontamination;
  • process suitable for refrigerated, frozen, or heat-sensitive products;
  • pallets available immediately after sterilization.

Ethylene Oxide (EtO) Sterilization

When the previous methods cannot be used, IONISOS resorts to EtO sterilization. This technique utilizes a gas, ethylene oxide, which eliminates undesirable organisms at low temperatures (up to 60°C).

This method, widely used for medical equipment and devices, involves slightly humidifying and preheating the products, then placing them in a sterilization chamber. They are subsequently stored in a degassing cell for 24 to 48 hours.

The advantages of EtO sterilization are primarily its reliability, compatibility with many materials, and its penetration rate.
